| On February 7th, 2011, I had to put my best friend, Bitsy, to sleep. She had multiple health problems but her kidneys finally set her over the edge. For the last month of her life, she only ate when I hand fed her like a baby with a spoon and she got fluid (dialysis) treatments everyday. She was a fighter and I fought right along with her until she told me the fight was over. Bitsy was my best friend and baby all in one tiny body. I got her 3 days after I went out on my own to build my vet clinic. She was a very sick puppy. Those early days I needed to prove to myself that I was capable of being a good vet. I needed to stay calm and not stress over all the problems associated with building a practice. Bitsy was my primary focus, so I kept her alive and she kept me calm but motivated. She came to work with me every day I worked for the last 13 years. She went on most of my vacations. She visited to her grandparents’ house with me. She went deer hunting, enjoyed family parties, sneaked into the hospital and nursing home to cheer her grandpa and even went shopping in 4 states (quietly sitting in my purse!) She loved to have her picture taken and being a proud Momma I have used (and will still use) her picture on many of my vet clinic ventures. In my personal life and battles, she has been my sounding block, my stress reliever, and my tear “licker.” As she has had health problems over the years and till the end, she made me see clearly the role of “momma” as well as veterinarian. It’s amazing how much strength and love was in her 3 ? lbs. I owe Bitsy for the success I have had as a veterinarian and for making my life better with all her unconditional love. I will never have to let that love go. Here's to you Bitsy.... When you were sad I dried up your tears. When you were scared I comforted your fears. When you were worried I gave you hope. When you were confused I helped you cope . And when you were lost and couldn't see the light I was your beacon shining ever so bright......... My spirit is now free but I will never depart as long as you keep me alive in your heart. Use control panel below, press arrow to start slideshow. |
