March News

Hello to the Flanary Veterinary Clinic Family,

Surely spring is coming soon. It’s almost time to start spending time outside camping and enjoying the great outdoors again with the family. On the downside fleas and ticks are ready for Spring too. If your pet is not on flea and tick prevention now is the time to start. If you wait for the first sign of these parasites then you will more than likely have problems with them until mid Summer. Truly an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Not all preventatives are created equal. We at Flanary Veterinary Clinic will be glad to help you tailor a preventative program for your pets and to protect your family. Many flea preventatives can actually be very toxic to your pet and may not be that effective. We recommend Frontline Plus if your pet has tick exposure. If your pet has minimal tick exposure Comfortis is our recommendation. Comfortis has the advantage of being a pill so that your family is not exposed to the chemicals on your pets skin. It is adultacidal meaning that it kills adult fleas unfortunately it has no effect on ticks.

I also want to remind everyone we need to be giving our pets monthly heartworm prevention. Unfortunately we have seen a huge increase in heartworm positive cases. We realize that times are difficult right now but this is most definitely not the place to cut corners.  It is much more cost effective to prevent heartworms than to treat them. Heartworm treatment can be very difficult on pets and requires about 2 and one half months of strict cage rest. Heartworm prevention also prevents intestinal worms that can be a health risk to the family.

Get out and enjoy the wonderful weather coming but make sure your pets are protected. Join us on Facebook and Twitter for some great up coming events and specials. We will also be offering a cat neuter special of a flat $40.00 to try to help keep the pet population down.
